Acton Memorial Library is open for browsing by appointment only. On demand curbside holds pickup is also available.

Library staff are actively working on our plans to phase in our in-person services. Our highest priority is the health and safety of our library patrons and library staff. We will be following public health guidelines and working closely with other town departments, our library network, and neighboring libraries to determine when it will be safe to begin certain in-person services. In the meantime, please continue to check our website, follow us on social media, or sign up for our newsletter. For the latest information in Acton, please visit https://www.actonma.gov/704/COVID-19

Browsing by Appointment

Library patrons can now book 30-minute appointments to enter the 1st floor of the library. Appointments are available Sundays 2-5 p.m., Mondays 1-5 p.m., and Tuesdays 9 a.m.-1 p.m. You must have an appointment to enter the building. Make appointments online at ActonMemorialLibrary.org/calendar. You will get a confirmation email after you make an appointment.

The children’s room and select adult collections will be available for browsing during your appointment. We will not offer computer use, study spaces, in-person technology assistance, or other services besides check out and browsing. You must make an appointment at ActonMemorialLibrary.org/calendar to enter the building. We ask that you arrive on time. Masks are required to enter the building.

Please be kind and schedule only the appointment times that you need. We anticipate this service will be very, very popular and we will do our best to accommodate as many library patrons as we are able.
We ask for your continued patience as we are working with limited staff, limited resources, and new processes. We look forward to seeing you in the library by appointment soon!

I can't call the library from the parking lot because I don't have a cell phone.

If you don't have a cell phone, please call the Circulation Department at 978-929-6655, option 2, to learn how you can utilize curbside pickup services.

Is curbside pickup only available to Acton residents?

Acton’s curbside pickup service is available to anyone with a Minuteman library card.

If I use curbside pickup in Acton for some holds, will that interfere with holds I have arranged to pick up at another library?

Using curbside pickup in Acton will not disrupt holds you have arranged to pick up at another library.

Requesting Items

I was told to place my hold requests online, but I’m not comfortable using a computer.

Please call the Reference Department at 978-929-6543 and leave a message with the titles you would like to request or with information about the types of items (author, subject, actor) you are looking for. After we contact you and place the holds, you will receive an email or phone call when your requested items are ready to pickup.

How do I request an item from the online catalog? Do I need to add items to my Book Cart?

To request an item from search results or the item’s detailed record, click the “Request” button next to the title. Log into your library account if you have not already done so and follow the prompts to complete your request.

You do not need to add items to the Book Cart to request them. The Book Cart allows you to temporarily store items in one place while searching or browsing the catalog, and ultimately print out that information or save those records to an online list in your library account.

I would like to request items for pickup, but I have too many library fines on my account. Can I pay my fines online with a credit card?

Yes! Please visit this webpage for instructions on how to pay your fines online:

https://www.actonmemoriallibrary.org/about-the-library/blog/pay-fines-online

In order to pay fines online, you will need to log into your library account with your user name or library card number and your library PIN/password.  If you do not know your password or never created one, please visit this webpage for instructions on how to create or reset your PIN/password:

https://www.actonmemoriallibrary.org/services/my-account/creating-or-re-setting-a-pin-password/

Outdoor Book Drop

Can I return items from other Minuteman libraries in Acton’s outdoor book drop?

Yes! Acton is accepting materials from all Minuteman libraries in our book drop. Materials will be quarantined for up to 7 days after they are returned and before they are checked in. While in quarantine, returned materials will still show as checked out to your library account. All overdue fines are being waived on items due while the library is closed.

Please do not return materials to Acton which belong to libraries outside of the Minuteman Library Network (including Boxborough, Littleton and Westford). We are unable to check in those materials in Acton.

Can I return DVDs/CDs/audiobooks in Acton’s outdoor book drop?

While the library is closed, you can return all materials from Minuteman libraries – including DVDs, CDs and books on CD – in Acton's outdoor book drop. As with books, media materials will be quarantined for up to 7 days after they are returned and before they are checked in. While in quarantine, returned materials will still show as checked out to your library account. All overdue fines are being waived on items due while the library is closed.

I returned my library items a few days ago, but they still appear on my account. What's going on?

All materials will be quarantined for up to 7 days after they are returned and before they are checked in. While in quarantine, returned materials will still show as checked out to your library account. All overdue fines are being waived on items due while the library is closed.

I have borrowed items that are too big or too fragile to put in the outdoor book drop.

Please contact the library to discuss how to return these items.

I checked out an item in Acton through the Commonwealth Catalog. Can I return it in Acton’s book drop, or should I return it to the home library?

Please return your Commonwealth Catalog item to Acton, not the home library. Because you checked out the book in Acton, the item needs to be returned to Acton so that we can complete the interlibrary loan paperwork on our end and return it to the home library.

You can return this item in Acton's outdoor book drop, along with any other Minuteman library materials. As with all other returned items, Commonwealth Catalog materials will be quarantined for at least 7 days after they are returned and before they are checked in. All overdue fines are being waived on items due while the library is closed.

Who should I contact if I have other questions?

Please leave a message with the Reference Department at 978-929-6543 or reference@acton-ma.gov. Reference staff are checking voicemail and email while working from home, and they will respond to your message as soon as possible.

Ask a Librarian

While the library is closed, staff working from home will continue to return calls and answer email.  To contact the library, please call 978-929-6543 and leave a message.  A staff member will get back to you. Please note that the call-backs will come from a private number and will not show a caller ID.  We are also available through email at:  reference@acton-ma.gov (or email the Children's department at:  ActChildrens@minlib.net).  Please include your library card number in your voicemail or email as this will help us resolve most issues more quickly.
