Testing & Education Reference Center

(Free for Acton residents -- Subscription paid for by the Library)

Acton Memorial Library’s subscription to Testing and Education Reference Center has free online practice tests, including the ACT, AP, CLEP, PSAT, SAT, and SAT subject tests. Home access is limited to Acton residents, but it is available to everyone from a library computer.

Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, like most high schools, offers help and information about all aspects of college planning and is clearly a first point of contact for advice and help. Their site has links to test prep sites as well as test dates and registration information.

Although published by the College Board, which operates the SAT, AP, PSAT, and CLEP, and sells study guides and online courses, this helpful site encourages people to use free prep methods. There are many helpful articles about testing, especially one called “Admission Test Myths”, a slide show which is a good place to start to understand how college testing works.

From the College Board, which is the administrator of the SAT and other tests, this official site has many free resources including: sample practice questions; a full length SAT practice test; a question of the day; “Skills Insight”, a tool to help users analyze their abilities; and information on test dates.  Other resources require a fee.

Providing a wealth of free information on SAT, ACT, SAT subject tests, AP subject tests, and GRE, this site is honest and informative, and has a reassuring, informal, humorous style which makes it very approachable.  It gives extensive and detailed information about all of the tests. One especially useful feature are the diagnostic tests which help to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses to guide the student to the areas of the free online study guides which will be most helpful.

The official site of the ACT offers tips, practice questions, descriptions of the test, a question of the day and information on dates and registration. You can download a free preparation booklet including practice tests. An online prep test and the official prep book are offered for purchase.
