Charlotte Sagoff
Memorial Garden

Please help us honor Charlotte and create a lovely new seating area outside the main entrance of the Acton Memorial Library. Our vision is for an approximately 20 foot by 25 foot area just to the left of the library entrance featuring:

  • Three benches (one next to current sidewalk)
  • Brick path & patio (handicap accessible)
  • Garden w/low maintenance, attractive plantings
  • Granite block table

A dogwood tree is already growing just behind the patio-bench location, and will provide a beautiful backdrop to the garden. Here is a view from ground level. We also hope to include Charlotte-inspired “word bricks” scattered throughout the brickwork. The overall design can be seen on this concept plan, created by Tom Tidman, Acton's Director of Natural Resources.

Charlotte was an:

  • An avid reader & Acton Memorial Library patron
  • Environmental leader in Acton
  • Acton Board of Health member
  • Founder of Acton Earth Day
  • Strong voice for the protection of Acton 's drinking water & cleanup of the W.R. Grace Superfund Site in Acton

This privately funded project is proposed by a group that includes members of the Acton Memorial Library Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Acton Libraries, and ACES (Acton Citizens for Environmental Safety). Thanks to these organizations and a growing list of sponsors and donors, this project can become a reality soon.

There are at least three ways to help. First and most immediate, you can make a tax-deductible contribution, please make your check out to:

Friends of the Acton Libraries
(Write “ Charlotte 's garden” in memo area)

and please mail it to:
Friends of the Acton Libraries; Charlotte 's Garden
c/o Bob Ferrara
10 Wachusett Drive
Acton, MA 01720

Second, you can volunteer to help with garden maintenance (weeding, watering, etc.) or supplies. If you have some gardening talent, please contact Cathy Fochtman (978-263-5806; fochtman(at)verizon.net)

Third, you can help publicize this campaign to your friends and neighbors. Our committee has produced this flyer and fundraising letter. If you would like to become involved on the committee, please contact any of the people below.

Thank you!
