John Whitney was born in Roxbury, Mass. (Watertown's Military History, p. 173).
This is probably John J.[sic] Whitney, born about 1826 in Roxbury, Mass. to John Dudley Whitney and Elizabeth (Doughty) Whitney. He was the oldest brother of William Francis B. Whitney. John F. [sic] age 24, was living with his parents in Acton in 1850. He and his wife Mary Elizabeth were recorded in Watertown in the 1860 and 1870 census (in 1870 as "John E."). He died Nov. 30, 1875 in Waltham, Mass. of pneumonia (source: genealogy for John J. John E.H. Whitney, a laborer, died November 30, 1875, age 52 years, 6 months, at Waltham, Mass. of pneumonia. He was born in Roxbury to John and Elizabeth Whitney (Waltham death register, "Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841–1910," v. 271, p. 212 [image], AmericanAncestors.org).
