John A. Howard was born in Dover, Vermont. He married Mary Ann Taft in Upton, Mass. on March 12, 1855. They had one child, Flora, born April, 1858 in Upton, Mass. (source: pension file).

The death of Lieut. John A. Howard, Soldier in United States Service, is recorded in the 1863/64 annual report for the Town of Acton, p. 18.
