Virginia on the ninth day of September, 1862, I entered the service
as Sergeant in Company E. 6th Mass. M.V.M. and during service was
promoted in rank to 2nd & 1st Sergeant and in Jany 1863 to Captain,
holding this rank at the close of the war.
3rd, 1863 at Lowell, Mass., I was first discharged as my term of
service had expired, but was commissioned and re-enlisted as Captain
of Co. E 6th Regiment Mass. Vol. for one hundred days.
expiration of this time of service, I was finally discharged on
Oct. 27th, 1864 at Readville.
engagement, in battle, was at Blackwater on Oct. 15, 1862.
I was also
engaged at Taini on Oct. 25 Ludlow Lawrences on Nov.
18, Deserted House on Jany 30, Siege of Suffolk on April 9th.
I was never
wounded, taken prisoner, confined in hospital or prison.
most intimate comrades were Sergt Levi Robbins, Henry Pollard,
Albert Robins, Dr. Isaiah Hutchins, Sergt Geo. L. Sawyer.
the most important of my army life to be able to cut my rations
and helping build Forts Hausemond and Medillan, doing scouting duty,
destroying Rebel R.R. Norfolk & Petersburg and Seaboard &
Roanoke and repulse of Longstreet at Suffolk.
