Maine, on the third day of September 1861, I entered the service
as private in Co. I. 8th Regiment Maine Infantry and later was promoted
in rank to Company Buglar.
I was finally discharged on Dec. 23rd, 1863 at Lovell's Gen. Hospital,
Portsmouth Grove, R.I. as I had wounds and had to lose a leg.
for two years and three months and twenty days.
We were at the taking of Hilton's Head S.C. but we were not engaged
and we were at the Taking of Fort Pulaski, mouth of Savannah River,
Georgia, next at Jacksonville, Florida, where I was wounded.
I was confined
in the hospitals at Beaufort S.C., David's Island and Fort Scuyles,
N.Y. Portsmouth Grove, R.I.
Among my most intimate comrades were T. Ingram, M. Rancord, C. Perry,
G. Perry, John Tyler, H. E. Stinchfield. The taking Hilton Head
