Stevens, Groton Junction, Mass., I entered the service as Sergeant,
in Company D. 53rd Reg. Mass. Volunteers on the second day of September,
term of enlistment had expired, I was discharged on Sept. 2nd, 1863
at Groton Junction.
enlisted in Company E. 5 Regiment Mass. Volunteers for one hundred
next discharged on November 16th, 1864 after the expiration of a
term of service.
battle that I took part in was at Fort Bisland, La. I also took
part ay Port Hudson, Apr. 27th and June 14th, 1863 and all through
the siege and capture of Port Hudson from Apr.27th to surrender
on July 9th, 1863.
I was wounded
at Port Hudson in neck & side on June 2nd, 1863.
intimate comrade was Sergt. Kilburn, who was killed by the premature
explosion of a shell, while lying on the same blanket with myself.
the most important event was the charge on the breast works of the
enemy at Port Hudson, June 14th, 1863, when we were obliged to fall
back and lay in burning sun all day under the breast works of the
Rebels, not barely able to get out until darkness came to our relief.
