Safari Books Online

If you want to learn about basic programming, computer software, digital photography, or another consumer technology, you can access digital versions of many technology books and guides through Safari Books Online.  Available at the library or at home to Acton residents using their library card, Safari Books Online provides current digital versions of books on a variety of topics.

Some of the categories featured in Safari Books are:

  • Photoshop and other photo and graphic manipulation software
  • Digital media software, from animation and 3D to audio editing, video creation, and more
  • Windows and Macintosh OS
  • Databases, including MySQL, Oracle, SQL, and XML
  • Programming, from ActionScript to Visual C++
  • Digital photography
  • And more!

If you’re a visual learner and prefer videos, you can access video guides to Microsoft products like Excel or Outlook, programming languages, and much more.

Here’s how to get started:

Visit our Databases page to access the listing of all our online databases. Navigate to “Computers/technology” in the subject guide by clicking on it in the menu or scrolling down the page.  Click on the link for “Safari Books Online” to get access to the database.

Home access is limited to Acton residents; if you are an Acton resident and are using this resource from home, you can log in at this stage using your library card number.  If you’re at the Library, the computer will automatically log you in as a library user.

You can browse by subject using the “browse category” links on the left side of the screen, or click on “All Titles” to view a list of all available titles.  When you find a title you’re interested in, just click on “start reading.”

To access a list of the video guides available through Safari Books Online, click on “All Titles” at the top right of the screen, then select the “videos” tab.
